Amy P. Loses Her “Fat Suit” and Overcomes Emotional Eating

Throughout her young adulthood, Amy P. felt as if she were trapped in an obese person’s body. Inside, she was filled with energy and bursting with personality, but on the outside, she was confined in a 325-pound “fat suit” that vanquished her self-confidence and sapped her energy.
Amy says, “I’ve been the unusually active obese woman. I’ve always loved sports, playing them, and getting into the game. I never had to be the best; I just needed to get out there and try. Unfortunately, I had an extra person with me because I was always twice the size of everyone else.”
Before Amy discovered the South Beach Diet, she tried a variety of other diets that simply didn’t work. Desperate to lose weight, she counted points and calories and attended support meetings. But always, her negative emotions would take over and she would eat to cope with the real issues that kept her from reaching her goals.
“I was in denial about how obese I actually was,” Amy recalls. “I became clumsy; I would run into walls. Luckily for me, I have a big heart, not judging people based on what people judged me on. And I was always more than willing to help someone in need, even if it meant putting me last. That was the root of my problem-I never put myself first,” Amy explains.
Amy’s frustrations with yo-yo dieting and the constant criticism from family and friends finally got so out of control that she felt that she just couldn’t live in her “fat suit” any longer. Amy decided it was time to take control of her health and put herself first. She even applied to be on the NBC hit show “The Biggest Loser,” but things fell through when she was told she didn’t have enough weight to lose. Shortly after, Amy discovered the South Beach Diet, began to follow it, and started to shed layers of her “fat suit.” Finally, she was able to say goodbye to the “old” Amy.
Before she started following the South Beach Diet, Amy would eat plenty of white bread, crackers, and pasta, but now she makes nutritious choices and packs her lunch to take to work every day. And exercise has become part of her daily routine; she runs regularly, and does push-ups, squats, and step-ups.
“For the first time in my life, I feel like I am going in the right direction. I have turned my weight-loss journey into a practice of better living. Since I started following the South Beach Diet, I’ve grown to be more accepting of my flaws and have adjusted the way I handle my weight. I love the South Beach Diet because it’s easy. It’s all real food, real people, and real choices,” Amy says.
After losing 164 pounds, literally half her size, Amy is leading a healthy lifestyle. While she still sometimes struggles with eating healthy in social settings, she has been able to overcome her emotional eating triggers.
Amy says, “Every day is a new struggle, but I want to be healthy more than I want to be fat my whole life.”

Most Effective Weight-Loss Strategy
“The most effective strategy is to get right back on the diet if I fall off and cheat. I keep in mind that I didn’t gain the weight overnight, so it’s not going to leave overnight. I am a work in progress and I can’t forget that slow progress is still progress. If you fall off the wagon and cheat, get right back on it!”
“I have learned to live my life, put myself first, and learned to say “no” when presented with foods I shouldn’t be consuming.”
