Creating a Path to a Healthier You
The goal of Mission Makeover is for the contestants “to completely makeover their lives through better health & wellness.” As a physician at The Women’s Wellness Center dedicated to Women’s Health, this is a great description of what I do. Every woman has unique healthcare needs which deserve to be met with an equally individual approach, so it is an honor and a privilege to be able to participate in this fantastic journey with the contestants.
If you were watching episode 2 this week, you saw nutritionist Meryl Brandwein and me address the contestants’ laboratory results in order to assist in their path toward better health this season.
The role of good nutrition and an exercise program cannot be underestimated in any mission to achieve optimal wellness. But whether your goal is weight loss, correction of existing medical problems, prevention of future issues, or a general desire for improved wellness, no plan is complete without a medical evaluation to help determine the best course of action. Without knowing where we are starting, we have no way of knowing how to reach our goals. This is why it is so important to be evaluated thoroughly by trained healthcare professionals before embarking on any health journey.
Medical testing – for existing medical problems, hormonal imbalances, and nutritional deficiencies – is a vital part of that initial evaluation. To provide a simple, but relevant, example, if there are two women who are overweight – one with high cholesterol and normal blood sugar levels, the other with normal cholesterol but has diabetes – each will need entirely different plans in order to reach their weight loss goals.
The women of Mission Makeover each have their own individual path ahead of them, which is evidenced by their unique laboratory results – much like the example I have given. The opportunity to provide individualized medical care and advice is one of the most satisfying aspects of my career. So I look forward to working with each of them to help them achieve their goals.
Keep watching the 4th season of Mission Makeover – Mondays at 7:30 AM on Lifetime Television – and follow the remarkable transformation of these incredible women!
All The Best,
Dr. Terrence Harris of Women’s Wellness Center of Boca Raton
